Able, B.L., Mattoon, 2812 Pine Ave. 1863. Mr. B.L. Able is one of the earliest settlers of Coles County. He was born in the year of 1830 in Hardin County, KY., came to Illinois in the year of 1854 and has resided in Coles County almost all the time since. He resided on a farm south of Mattoon in Paradise Township until about 1894 when he retired from farm life and moved to the city of Mattoon where he has resided since. He is still hale and hearty and id sable to walk up town every day, a distance not often walked by men of his age. He has seen Coles County advance from a wet and unborken country to one that can not be excelled in the state for agricultural products.

Ames, Newton C., North Okaw Township, Coles County, was born in Somerset County, N.J., Sept. 16, 1850. He received his education in public schools and at Westfield Academy, with a course at the Bryant and Stratton Business College in Chicago. In 1879 he began to breed and feed stock on a large scale. All improvements on Section 24, where he lived until his death, was all his own work. On Jan. 7, 1880, Mr. Ames was united in marriage to Laura A. Thomas, and four children were born to this union. Harvey N., Anna B., Inez E. and Blanche. Mr. Ames died July 8, 1908. Mrs. Ames died April 29, 1910.
